De fam\u00edlia aristocr\u00e1tica, ingressou na ordem beneditina com o nome Greg\u00f3rio.<\/p>\n<p>Nomeado bispo e cardeal de Imola (1758) pelo j\u00e1 ent\u00e3o papa Pio VI, foi eleito como novo pont\u00edfice (1800), em Veneza, com o nome de Pio VII, em substitui\u00e7\u00e3o a Pio VI que morrera em seu cativeiro, na Fran\u00e7a.<\/p>\n<p>Inicialmente aliado de Napole\u00e3o, atrav\u00e9s de um acordo pol\u00edtico (1801), inclusive participando das festas de coroa\u00e7\u00e3o do imperador franc\u00eas (1804), essas rela\u00e7\u00f5es se romperam completamente com a invas\u00e3o da It\u00e1lia pelos franceses e a anexa\u00e7\u00e3o dos Estados Pontif\u00edcios (1809).<\/p>\n<p>O sumo pont\u00edfice excomungou os invasores e, aprisionado, foi levado a Fontainebleau e obrigado a assinar novo acordo, intimamente de nenhum valor pelo lado do papa. Ap\u00f3s a derrota de Napole\u00e3o (1814), retornou em triunfo a Roma e o Congresso de Viena devolveu-lhe quase todos os Estados Pontif\u00edcios (1815). Estabilizado no poder, de ent\u00e3o at\u00e9 morrer, em Roma, procurou adaptar o papado \u00e0s condi\u00e7\u00f5es pol\u00edticas, intelectuais e sociais do mundo moderno, destacando-se a promo\u00e7\u00e3o de uma pol\u00edtica de amizade com as na\u00e7\u00f5es europ\u00e9ias, o restabelecimento da Companhia de Jesus e o reconhecimento dos movimentos por independ\u00eancia das col\u00f4nias latino-americanos. Papa de n\u00famero 252, foi eleito em substitui\u00e7\u00e3o a Pio VI (1775-1799), foi substitu\u00eddo por Le\u00e3o XII (1823-1829).<\/p>\n<p class=\"fonte\">Fonte:
