Representa a forma mais eficaz de obter energia, atrav\u00e9s do conjunto de vias metab\u00f3licas pelas quais a mol\u00e9cula de glicose (principal fonte de produ\u00e7\u00e3o energ\u00e9tica das c\u00e9lulas) \u00e9 oxidada, ocorrendo \u00e0 liberta\u00e7\u00e3o de energia, que \u00e9 armazenada em mol\u00e9culas de ATP, ou seja, processo natural do corpo de usar a glicose para fun\u00e7\u00f5es do organismo.<\/p>\n<p>Todos os seres vivos que vivem na presen\u00e7a de oxig\u00eanio s\u00e3o denominados de aer\u00f3bios. A maioria dos seres vivos encontra-se nestas condi\u00e7\u00f5es. Os seres que sobrevivem na aus\u00eancia do oxig\u00eanio s\u00e3o chamados de anaer\u00f3bios.<\/p>\n<p>Nos seres vivos a respira\u00e7\u00e3o aer\u00f3bia nos seres vivos \u00e9 caracterizada pela utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o do oxig\u00eanio para a quebra da mol\u00e9cula de glicose, sendo degradada em di\u00f3xido de carbono e \u00e1gua, tornando-se energia. A glicose \u00e9 quebrada parcialmente e forma duas mol\u00e9culas de piruvato. O ciclo de Krebs ocorre na mitoc\u00f4ndria e consiste em rea\u00e7\u00f5es de oxirredu\u00e7\u00e3o, descarboxila\u00e7\u00e3o e fosforila\u00e7\u00e3o.Neste processo s\u00e3o liberados v\u00e1rios hidrog\u00eanios e ocorre libera\u00e7\u00e3o de energia, resultando na forma\u00e7\u00e3o de ATP.<\/p>\n<p>Denominada tamb\u00e9m como transporte eletr\u00f4nico ou fosforila\u00e7\u00e3o oxidativa, acadeira respirat\u00f3ria, recebe hidrog\u00eanios, formando mol\u00e9culas de \u00e1gua. Ocorre nas cristas mitocondriais e consiste na transfer\u00eancia de el\u00e9trons at\u00e9 a mol\u00e9cula de oxig\u00eanio, sendo neste processo onde ocorre a maior parte da libera\u00e7\u00e3o de energia.<\/p>\n<p>Os produtos finais da respira\u00e7\u00e3o celular \u00e9 o g\u00e1s carb\u00f4nico CO<sub>2<\/sub>, \u00e1gua H<sub>2<\/sub>O e ATP.
