( ? – 996)<\/h2>\nPapa da Igreja Cat\u00f3lica Romana (985-996) nascido em Roma, consagrado em agosto (985) sucessor de Jo\u00e3o XIV (983-984), o primeiro papa que iniciou um processo de canoniza\u00e7\u00e3o de um santo, o Santo Ulderico ou Ulrico de Augsburgo (995). Culto, partid\u00e1rio da reforma cluniacense, era filho de um sacerdote romano de nome Le\u00e3o, foi eleito ap\u00f3s a morte do antipapa Bonif\u00e1cio VII e, em uma \u00e9poca em que prestigio do papado estava em baixa, continuou v\u00edtima do ambiente e do ego\u00edsmo do tempo. Quem mandava em Roma era Jo\u00e3o Cresc\u00eancio Nomentano, o Cresc\u00eancio II, filho de Cresc\u00eancio I, que se tornara mais poderoso que seu pai e recuperara o t\u00edtulo de Patricio dos romanos, que correspondia ao de imperador, e inicialmente apoiou o papa. Apesar das circunst\u00e2ncias o papa conseguiu impor sua autoridade em alguns conflitos de dimens\u00e3o internacional, como o do arcebispado de Reims, o de Ricardo da Normand\u00eda com Etelredo II da Inglaterra. Por\u00e9m com o tempo desgastou-se em Roma junto ao clero por seu descarado nepotismo. Tamb\u00e9m teve que enfrentar Cresc\u00eancio que, por sua parte, saqueava sem quaisquer constrangimentos os bens da Igleja.\n\nComo o romano era mais poderoso, pois o papa em fuga, que se refugiou em Toscana, para escapar da persegui\u00e7\u00e3o vingativa de Cresc\u00eancio II. De l\u00e1 pediu ajuda a regente do imp\u00e9rio germ\u00e2nico, Te\u00f3fano, enquanto o imperador Oto III, filho de Oto II, era menor de idade. Temendo pela presen\u00e7a do ex\u00e9rcito germ\u00e2nico em Roma, Cresc\u00eancio II prop\u00f4s um acordo pacificante que permitiu ao papa retornar \u00e0 Roma (996). O papa de n\u00famero 138 faleceu em mar\u00e7o (996), em Roma, e foi sucedido por Greg\u00f3rio V (996-999) indicado por Oto III e aprovado pelos cardeais romanos. Oto III estava a caminho de Roma e encontrava-se em R\u00e1vena quando o papa morreu. Imediatamente, para n\u00e3o dar chances a usurpadores ou opositores, este designou como novo papa seu capel\u00e3o, Bruno, filho do duque Oto de Carintia e neto de Oto I, o Grande, que tomou o nome de Greg\u00f3rio V. Consta deste per\u00edodo algumas incertezas ou questionamentos hist\u00f3ricos. Em algumas compila\u00e7\u00f5es hist\u00f3ricas, \u00e9 citado como Jo\u00e3o XVI, em decorr\u00eancia da divis\u00e3o err\u00f4nea de seu pontificado em dois per\u00edodos, com a inser\u00e7\u00e3o de um aparentemente inexistente Jo\u00e3o XV. Tamb\u00e9m menciona-se a exist\u00eancia de um antipapa de nome Jo\u00e3o XVI (993), o Jo\u00e3o Filagato. O certo \u00e9 que um papa com o nome espec\u00edfico de Jo\u00e3o XVI n\u00e3o consta na maioria das listas de pont\u00edfices.\n
