Era vice-chanceler do imperador Oto II na It\u00e1lia e bispo de P\u00e1via, e se prop\u00f4s continuar a pol\u00edtica de seu predecessor e abordar a reforma da Igreja. Por\u00e9m logo ap\u00f3s sua elei\u00e7\u00e3o, o imperador e seu protetor morreu naquele mesmo m\u00eas (983). Era o momento que esperava Bonifacio VII desde dez anos atr\u00e1s. Assim, com o apoio de Cresc\u00eancio II e seu grupo de cardeais e da nobreza romana opositora dos germ\u00e2nicos, regressou de seu ref\u00fagio em Constantinopla. Chegou \u00e0 Roma em abril (964), prendeu o pont\u00edfice e usurpou-lhe o trono de S\u00e3o Pedro. Encarcerado nas masmorras de Sant\u2019Angelo, o desgra\u00e7ado papa morreu 4 meses depois, em 20 de agosto (984), provavelmente de fome, tendo seu corpo sido enterrado em S\u00e3o Pedro. Considerando que Bonifacio VII foi um antipapa (984-985) e um criminoso, o ex-bispo de P\u00e1via foi o papa de n\u00famero 137e foi sucedido por Jo\u00e3o XV (985-996).
