Presumivelmente filho incestuoso de Mar\u00f3cia, corrupta e cortes\u00e3 de alta classe, com um papa anterior, S\u00e9rgio III (904-911), e legitimado como do marqu\u00eas Alberico de Tusculum, uma antiga cidade da hoje Regi\u00e3o do L\u00e1zio, ao sul de Roma, pr\u00f3xima do vulc\u00e3o de Alban, que seria destru\u00edda pelos romanos (1191). Foi eleito com ajuda das intrigas da m\u00e3e, Senatrix e Patr\u00edcia romana ou domna sen\u00e1trix. Apesar de ter sido eleito com a ajuda da sua pr\u00f3pria fam\u00edlia, tentou apaziguar os tremendos conflitos intrafamiliares e deplorou sua libertinagem, mas n\u00e3o foi bem sucedido.\n\nCom o papado sob controle pela presen\u00e7a do filho no trono, por causa de sua ambi\u00e7\u00e3o desmedida, ela casou-se com o cunhado Hugo, rei da Proven\u00e7a e It\u00e1lia, para ampliar seus poderes, e desenvolveu um governo tir\u00e2nico em Roma. Em pouco tempo os nobres, liderados por Alberico II, filho mais novo de Mar\u00f3cia, derrubaram-lhe do poder, foi presa e o marido fugiu. Alberico tornou-se o novo governante de Roma, dando ao papa apenas o poder de exercer os seus deveres espirituais, sem quaisquer jurisdi\u00e7\u00f5es inerentes ao cargo pontif\u00edcio. Sem autoridade e perseguido, o papa refugiou-se junto aos monges de Cluny e, em agradecimento, concedeu \u00e0 congrega\u00e7\u00e3o v\u00e1rios privil\u00e9gios, tornando-a mais tarde, um poderoso agente da reforma da Igreja.\n\nDepois de muitas atribula\u00e7\u00f5es, o papa de n\u00famero 126 morreu e foi sucedido por Le\u00e3o VII (936-939). Conta-se que amava as artes e especialmente a m\u00fasica e agraciou com sua prote\u00e7\u00e3o a muitos artistas. As manobras nefastas de Mar\u00f3cia n\u00e3o terminaram com a morte de seu filho. Pelos menos seus quatro sucessores, foram eleitos por sua influ\u00eancia, ou de sua irm\u00e3 Teodora: Le\u00e3o VII (936-939), Estev\u00e3o IX (939-942), Marinho II (942-946) e Ag\u00e1pito II (946-955).
