Eleito papa em um per\u00edodo conflituoso, reconheceu a validade da elei\u00e7\u00e3o do Papa Formoso (891-896) e convocou v\u00e1rios s\u00ednodos para restaurar a paz na Igreja. O papa de Tivoli procurou colocar uma pedra sobre este epis\u00f3dio bizarro e, al\u00e9m de queimar todos os documentos do Synodus Horrenda, proibiu que voltassem a colocar pessoas mortas em julgamento. Durante seu pontificado, acabou com as pilhagens que ocorriam nos pal\u00e1cios dos bispos e do papa, especialmente ap\u00f3s a morte destes e restabeleceu a supremacia da Igreja sobre todos os territ\u00f3rios e sobre Roma. Para evitar novas lutas, rep\u00f4s a interven\u00e7\u00e3o imperial sobre a consagra\u00e7\u00e3o dos pont\u00edfices.
