Devido ao seu estado de sa\u00fade foi eleito propositalmente pelos cardeais devido sua velhice e por suas simpatias com a Espanha. Um forte grupo antiespanhol havia-se formado no Sacro Col\u00e9gio, que no entanto n\u00e3o ousava manifestar sua atitude. Para ganhar tempo, decidiram eleger ao trono de S\u00e3o Pedro um velho enfermo, enquanto se resolvia os problemas da pol\u00edtica de seu predecessor em rela\u00e7\u00e3o a Fran\u00e7a.
