Filho do Duque de Lorena, e parente de Le\u00e3o IX, e irm\u00e3o de Godofredo II, o Barbudo, iniciou sua carreira na c\u00faria sob o pontificado de Le\u00e3o IX e, como abade de Monte Cassino, continuou servindo a V\u00edtor II. Consagrado no trono e defensor da reforma da Igreja e especialmente da independ\u00eancia do papa em rela\u00e7\u00e3o ao imperador, o que motivou a contesta\u00e7\u00e3o de sua elei\u00e7\u00e3o, ocorrida sem a designa\u00e7\u00e3o de Henrique III. Rodeou-se de ilustres e insignes conselheiros, que lhe assistiram politicamente, como seus amigos cardeais S\u00e3o Pedro Dami\u00e3o, o monge Humberto e Hildebrando de Soana, subdi\u00e1cono e secret\u00e1rio do papa anterior e um dos respons\u00e1veis diretos pela sua elei\u00e7\u00e3o. Teve tamb\u00e9m o m\u00e9rito religioso e sem querer cient\u00edfico, de proibir o matrim\u00f4nio entre consang\u00fc\u00edneos.
