Mar\u00f3cia tinha colocado no trono papal um de seus sobrinhos, e embora eleito canonicamente, Le\u00e3o VI (928) era um simples leigo, que foi expulso como intruso pelo povo romano sete meses depois e morreu subitamente, possivelmente envenenado pela pr\u00f3pria Mar\u00f3cia. Essa poderosa mulher era uma pol\u00edtica romana, corrupta, cortes\u00e3 de alta classe e m\u00e3e dos papas S\u00e9rgio III e Jo\u00e3o XI, conhecida universalmente por sua libertinagem e seus crimes, manchada por uma longa s\u00e9rie de adult\u00e9rios e uni\u00f5es incestuosas, recebeu dos pr\u00edncipes italianos, como pre\u00e7o de sua devassid\u00e3o, a propriedade do Castelo de Sant\u00e2ngelo e o governo da cidade de Roma com o t\u00edtulo de Senatrix e Patricia romana. O novo papa, substituto de Le\u00e3o VI, governou por dois anos e favoreceu os mosteiros de S. Vicente, em Volturno, e aos dois conventos na G\u00e1lia. Seu pontificado tamb\u00e9m coincidiu com o crescimento desproporcional da fortuna de Mar\u00f3cia, agora esposa de Hugo, rei da It\u00e1lia. Sua morte repentina, em Roma (931), tamb\u00e9m deixou suspeitas de enveneamento promovido pela libertina pol\u00edtica.
