Bispo de Bamberg, sucedeu o papa Greg\u00f3rio VI, quando este foi obrigado a abdicar. Eleito, preocupou-se com o poder alcan\u00e7ado pelos bispos-condes, causa de lutas com seus s\u00faditos, e conseguiu vencer a resist\u00eancia do bispo Ariberto de Mil\u00e3o. Sua nomea\u00e7\u00e3o foi um cumprimento expresso \u00e0 vontade de Henrique III, rei da Alemanha. Apesar das circunst\u00e2ncias de sua elei\u00e7\u00e3o, foi aceito tanto pelo povo como pelo clero. Deliberou que toda nova elei\u00e7\u00e3o papal deveria ter sua origem em uma designa\u00e7\u00e3o imperial. Logo depois de ser consagrado papa, coroou solenemente imperador germ\u00e2nico em S\u00e3o Pedro, dando-lhe o t\u00edtulo de patr\u00edcio dos romanos, o que dava ao imperador um peso decisivo na elei\u00e7\u00e3o papal e tamb\u00e9m o essencial apoio militar ao pont\u00edfice. Depois de ter acompanhado Henrique III \u00e0 Alemanha, canonizou na Alemanha, Santa Viborata, m\u00e1rtir h\u00fangara.
