Filho de um conhecido presb\u00edtero de nome Jocundo, foi ordenado pelo papa Dam\u00e1sio I (366-383) e serviu como representante de Inoc\u00eancio I em Constantinopla (405).\n\nO in\u00edcio de seu papado foi marcado por uma intensa disputa pela tiara papal visto que uma parte do clero, apoiada por Carlos de Ravena, elegeu Eul\u00e1lio como novo papa (418) e essa tumultuosa disputa, que envolveu eclesi\u00e1sticos, popula\u00e7\u00e3o e pol\u00edticos romanos, durou por cerca de dois anos (418-420).\n\nDepois da morte do papa Z\u00f3zimo I (418), o antipapa Eul\u00e1lio, disputou a tiara com o papa considerado leg\u00edtimo. S\u00edmaco, prefeito de Roma, requereu o direito de \u00e1rbitro em fun\u00e7\u00e3o de seu cargo pol\u00edtico. Influenciado pelo prefeito, o imperador Hon\u00f3rio decidiu apoiar o antipapa e seus partid\u00e1rios, colocou o antipapa na bas\u00edlica de S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o do Latr\u00e3o e expulsou o papa de Roma.\n\nOs partid\u00e1rios do deposto foram ao imperador contra o prefeito de Roma. O imperador Hon\u00f3rio convocou os dois papas a seu tribunal, interferindo mais ainda a s\u00e9rio numa quest\u00e3o que n\u00e3o deveria lhe dizer respeito. Eul\u00e1lio n\u00e3o obedeceu o chamamento do imperador e resolver tomar a bas\u00edlica de S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o de Latr\u00e3o pela for\u00e7a das armas.\n\nOs cism\u00e1ticos foram expulsos por ordem do imperador, e finalmente ele pode assumir o trono que tinha direito leg\u00edtimo. Com a interven\u00e7\u00e3o de Carlos de Ravena, come\u00e7a a inger\u00eancia do poder civil na elei\u00e7\u00e3o do papa. O novo papa teve dificuldades com v\u00e1rios arcebispados e para administrar a Igreja na \u00c1frica, em particular, o caso de Api\u00e1rio (419), onde teve de interferir pessoalmente.\n\nSeus esfor\u00e7os no entanto garantiram o respeito ao papa como autoridade m\u00e1xima da Igreja. No plano religioso renovou a legisla\u00e7\u00e3o do papa Sotero, que proibia as mulheres tocarem os linhos sagrados ou auxiliar na queima de incenso, e manteve as leis que proibiam escravos de se tornarem cl\u00e9rigos.\n\nPapa de n\u00famero 42, morreu em Roma, foi enterrado no cemit\u00e9rio de Maximus, no Por Salaria, e foi sucedido por S\u00e3o Celestino I (422-432).
