Filho de F\u00f3tio I, Patriarca de Costantinopla, ordenou-se sacerdote do Papa Est\u00eav\u00e3o VI.\n\nEra um homem piedoso e querido pelo povo e trouxe para enterrar na Bas\u00edlica de S\u00e3o Pedro, o corpo do Papa Formoso, achado no Tibre e provisoriamente sepultado na pequena igreja de Santa In\u00eas, na cidade de Porto. Conseguiu com sua bondade, reconciliar antigos inimigos do clero e da corrupta nobreza romana.\n\nPapa de n\u00famero 116, morreu repentinamente em Roma, com suspeita de envenenamento por recusar-se a aceitar a continua\u00e7\u00e3o da inger\u00eancia dos partidos civis nos assuntos religiosos, e foi sucedido por Jo\u00e3o IX (898-900).\n\nEntre os suspeitos da sua morte tamb\u00e9m cita-se o futuro papa S\u00e9rgio III, aristocrata da fam\u00edlia dos condes de T\u00fasculo, uma antiga cidade da hoje Regi\u00e3o do L\u00e1zio, ao sul de Roma, pr\u00f3xima do vulc\u00e3o de Alban, que seria destru\u00edda pelos romanos (1191), e feroz advers\u00e1rio do papa Formoso.
