Segundo filho do governante florentino Louren\u00e7o o Magn\u00edfico, foi destinado, conforme a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o, \u00e0 carreira eclesi\u00e1stica. Na corte do pai, recebeu esmerada educa\u00e7\u00e3o e tornou-se membro do Sacro Col\u00e9gio dos Cardeais (1492). Com a morte do papa guerreiro J\u00falio II (1513), assumiu o papado com o nome de Le\u00e3o X, ap\u00f3s um acordo entre a c\u00faria romana e as lideran\u00e7as florentinas. Continuando o trabalho de J\u00falio II no terreno art\u00edstico, acelerou as obras da bas\u00edlica de S\u00e3o Pedro, ampliou a biblioteca do Vaticano e fez de Roma novamente o centro cultural do Ocidente. No campo pol\u00edtico concluiu um acordo que dava aos reis da Fran\u00e7a o poder de eleger quase toda a hierarquia religiosa do pa\u00eds, por\u00e9m quando Francisco I da Fran\u00e7a invadiu a It\u00e1lia, por\u00e9m, apoiou as tropas do imperador Carlos V. Para financiar os vultosos gastos militares e suntu\u00e1rios, aumentou a venda de indulg\u00eancias, o que deu origem ao desafio \u00e0 Roma lan\u00e7ado por Martinho Lutero (1517) que, obviamente, tinha interesses, junto com a nobreza germ\u00e2nica, nos ganhos financeiros desse mercado. Com o encerramento do Conc\u00edlio de Latr\u00e3o, convocado por J\u00falio II, foi incapaz de avaliar as profundas ra\u00edzes pol\u00edticas e sociais das teses luteranas, e perdeu a oportunidade de desenvolver reformas imprescind\u00edveis na igreja cat\u00f3lica.
