Interveio na reforma do clero na Fran\u00e7a. Bispo de Lucca, foi eleito papa apenas pelos cardeais, seguindo as normas estabelecidas pelo seu antecessor. A nobreza romana, exclu\u00edda da elei\u00e7\u00e3o, n\u00e3o aceitou sua escolha e, com a dieta de Basil\u00e9ia (1061), a imperatriz In\u00eas, regente em lugar de Henrique IV, ent\u00e3o com onze anos, atendeu \u00e0 proposta da nobreza romana e do episcopado lombardo e declarou nula sua elei\u00e7\u00e3o. O bispo de Parma, Cadalo, foi indicado para exercer o pontificado com o nome de Hon\u00f3rio II. O antipapa n\u00e3o foi reconhecido pela corte alem\u00e3, criando tumultos e guerras.\n\nPapa e antipapa excomungaram-se mutuamente, at\u00e9 que o Conc\u00edlio de M\u00e2ntua (1064) reconheceu o bagiano como leg\u00edtimo papa e dep\u00f4s Cadalo que, excomungado, fugiu de Roma. Estabilizado no poder, combateu a simonia e promoveu reformas. Do lat. med. simonia, ou ato de Sim\u00e3o, de Sim\u00e3o, o Mago, que pretendeu comprar a S. Pedro o dom de conferir o Esp\u00edrito Santo, significa tr\u00e1fico de coisas sagradas ou espirituais, tais como sacramentos, dignidades, benef\u00edcios eclesi\u00e1sticos. Apoiou o movimento religioso e social reformista, que se op\u00f4s \u00e0 decad\u00eancia e \u00e0 corrup\u00e7\u00e3o eclesi\u00e1stica, chamado de pataria, em Mil\u00e3o, contra o arcebispo Godofredo. Apoiou a conquista da Inglaterra (1066) por Guilherme da Normandia.
