Famoso por sua cultura humanista, tornou-se preceptor de Alexandre Farnese, sobrinho do papa Paulo III, e dessa forma conseguiu exercer not\u00e1vel influ\u00eancia nos assuntos eclesi\u00e1sticos. Ordenado sacerdote, foi eleito bispo de Nicastro e cardeal (1539). Foi nomeado (1543) para exercer a fun\u00e7\u00e3o de legado junto ao imperador Carlos V e foi primeiro legado (1545) no Conc\u00edlio de Trento. Durante o pontificado de J\u00falio III, foi nomeado bibliotec\u00e1rio apost\u00f3lico e reorganizou totalmente a Biblioteca Vaticana, promovendo tamb\u00e9m pesquisas hist\u00f3ricas e arqueol\u00f3gicas. Sempre mostrou-se preocupou-se com os russos e mong\u00f3is. Capaz e experiente, todos aprovaram por sua escolha, mas infelizmente, morreu em 1\u00ba de maio do mesmo ano, depois de apenas 22 dias de pontificado. Mesmo assim foi considerado uma das mais nobres figuras da hist\u00f3ria do papado e deixou na c\u00faria um sinal de justi\u00e7a e austeridade. O papa de n\u00famero 29, morreu repentinamente em Roma, e foi sucedido por Paulo IV (1555-1559).
