Pontificou em meio \u00e0s agita\u00e7\u00f5es causadas por Arnaldo de Brescia. Reconciliou-se com Roger da Sic\u00edlia, que necessitava da investidura papal, e entregou aos Frangipani a fortaleza erigida sobre as ru\u00ednas do Coliseu. Antigos partid\u00e1rios do imperador, os Frangipani se transformaram em guelfos, partid\u00e1rios dos papas e advers\u00e1rio dos gibelinos nos estados italianos da Idade M\u00e9dia, e a luta contra o Senado republicano voltou a imperar. A situa\u00e7\u00e3o em Roma era de quase incontrol\u00e1vel agita\u00e7\u00e3o. Giordano Pierleoni instaurou um Senado e um governo que declarou deposto o poder temporal do papa. Os senadores elegeram pont\u00edfice Pierleoni, irm\u00e3o do antipapa Anacleto, e a popula\u00e7\u00e3o mais pobre, a plebe menor, aderiu a causa republicana. O papa o enfrentou no senado e enquanto tentava pacificar um movimento popular, foi atingido mortalmente por uma pedrada.
