Eleito, s\u00f3 conseguiu assumir o trono de S\u00e3o Pedro ap\u00f3s uma s\u00e9rie de tram\u00f3ias que ele mesmo desaprovou, fomentadas pelas intrigas romanas criadas pelas influentes fam\u00edlias. No trono de S\u00e3o Pedro foi um papa en\u00e9rgico e independente e lutou contra os sarracenos, que h\u00e1 cerca de tr\u00eas d\u00e9cadas assolavam o sul da It\u00e1lia, destruindo os grandes mosteiros de Subiaco e de Farfa, assaltando e aprisionando peregrinos, levando-os para Roma, para vend\u00ea-los como escravos.\n\nCoroou Bereng\u00e1rio imperador, em Roma (915), armou uma poderosa liga entre os duques e, auxiliado pela esquadra bizantina, derrotou os sarracenos perto de Garillano, e expulsou-os para sempre. Apesar das incessantes revolu\u00e7\u00f5es que ocorreram em seu pontificado, fez muito pela convers\u00e3o dos B\u00e1rbaros, da reconstru\u00e7\u00e3o de mosteiros e da pureza da f\u00e9. Por n\u00e3o querer participar de tramas desonestas, viu seu irm\u00e3o Pedro, comandante pontif\u00edcio, ser trucidado pelas tropas do borgonh\u00eas Guido de T\u00fascia, duque de Toscana e segundo marido da dissoluta e violenta Mar\u00f3cia, ap\u00f3s atacarem Roma. O pont\u00edfice foi deposto, aprisionado e assassinado no c\u00e1rcere (928) por capangas de Mar\u00f3cia. O papa de n\u00famero 123 faleceu em 26 de maio, em Roma, e foi sucedido por Le\u00e3o VI (928), sobrinho.de Mar\u00f3cia e colocado por ela no trono papal um simples leigo, que foi expulso como intruso pelo povo romano poucos meses depois.
