Cardeal (1116), foi eleito em circunst\u00e2ncias muito complicadas e essa elei\u00e7\u00e3o derivou efetivamente da reuni\u00e3o secreta dos cardeais da fac\u00e7\u00e3o dos Frangipane. Os cardeais advers\u00e1rios, da fam\u00edlia Pierleoni, escolheram o cardeal Piero Pierleoni, com o nome de Anacleto II, considerado pelos Frangipane como antipapa. Como Anacleto possu\u00eda muitos seguidores em Roma, teve de fugir e refugiou-se na Fran\u00e7a, onde compartilhou o ex\u00edlio com Gel\u00e1sio. Na Fran\u00e7a conseguiu o apoio do rei da Inglaterra e do imperador Lot\u00e1rio II, que sucedera Henrique V como imperador, em troca de sua coroa\u00e7\u00e3o. Com o apoio do ex\u00e9rcito sax\u00f4nico, derrotou (1136) Rog\u00e9rio II de Altavilla, que apoiava Anacleto II e, por sua vez, havia sido reconhecido como rei da Sic\u00edlia por este \u00faltimo. Voltou \u00e0 Roma, e com a morte de Anacleto II (1138) e a ren\u00fancia de seu sucessor V\u00edtor IV (1139), foi reconhecido como \u00fanico pont\u00edfice. O segundo Conc\u00edlio Latranense (1139), ratificou a sua elei\u00e7\u00e3o, mas teve de reconhecer Rog\u00e9rio II como rei da Sic\u00edlia. As cont\u00ednuas lutas pol\u00edtico-religiosas impediram-no de continuar a obra de reforma da Igreja iniciada por seus predecessores.
